SS. Ursus and Victor with Bertha of Swabia

In the 10th century Queen Bertha had the church shown here constructed in memory of the two martyrs who were beheaded in Solothurn. The inscriptions identify them as Ursus on the left and Victor on the right. They are pictured here with their heads in their hands and halos where the heads would be. The halos are presented as radiant suns because after the beheading "there appeared over them as it were rays from the sun." The palm branches at their feet of course symbolize their status as martyrs.
